Quality over quantity is a good rule of thumb for almost any industry or profession. Everyone is always on the move, so these days quantity often gets placed above quality, but what if that isn't what's important?

When it comes to writing blogs, you are but a mere drop of water in an ocean of how-to blogs, inspirational posts, and educational content. So, what will make you stick out while gaining exposure for your company? Follow these 6 steps to take your blog writing to the next level.

1. Update Previous Posts 

Before you even think about creating a new blog, take a look at the content you've written in the past. Whether it be from 6 months ago or 6 years ago, read over your dated content and decide if any of the information needs to be updated. If there isn't any information that necessarily needs to be updated, you can always spruce up the language and images. This is great for your website SEO and should be revisited frequently to maintain your credibility.

2. Research Audience, Topic, and Keywords 

Find out who your target audience is, what information they tend to consume, and what keywords may be useful to include in your post to aid in boosting traffic. However, sometimes it's best to research keywords after writing your blog and finding ways to tastefully work them into your blog so you don't get caught up in keyword stuffing.

3. Connect with Your Audience 

Connecting with your audience ties in with the research component of writing a blog but takes the result of the research one step further. Not only do you want to know your audience, but you want to connect with them. This is the beauty of the internet and social media – you can find ways to connect with someone that may not be in the same room or even on the same continent. Find out what questions or problems your target audience may have and provide a solution through your blog. Be the hero in their story and make their lives easier. 

4. Be Concise

Provide the information they need either at the very beginning of the blog, or in a format that lets them get the information they need just by a quick scan of the blog. For example, I have numbered the main points of this blog so if the reader is in a hurry, they can get the information they need in seconds. However, if the reader has some extra time, they can go ahead and read the entirety of the blog. Make your blogs versatile for the readers and non-readers alike. You don't always need a 10-page essay to get your point across. In the words of Baltasar Gracian, "Good things, when short, are twice as good."

5. Take Your Time  

It's easy to rush through writing a blog just to meet your quota, but it's much more productive to spend time on 1 very successful blog, versus having 25 mediocre blogs that get little to no engagement. Take the time to create something great, you won't regret it. 

6. Include Images  

We're a very visual world. You can write a compelling blog, but images greatly contribute to the aesthetic of your page. Make people want to come back for more, and visually represent your ideas in whatever way you can. 

Bonus Tip: 

Don't let a good post go without getting the proper exposure it deserves. Post your blog on all forms of social media. Just make sure not to post all on the same day and change the text you pair with the link for each platform you post on.
